Practices and Support for Mind, Body, and Soul
Wellness Within | Kapha + Awaken + Deepen

Welcome to Wellness Within, your monthly guide to holistic healing. Exploring all things whole body wellness – mental and emotional healing, practical holistic health tips, spiritual tools, and ancient knowledge for being a peaceful, healthy, kind human being.
Today, we dive deeper into how to best support your systems through the seasonal shift to spring. As the earth awakens from winter’s slumber, Kapha season arrives, bringing with it heavy, cool, damp qualities. Think melting snow, rainy days, and a slower pace of life.
While this energy supports grounding and nourishment, too much Kapha can leave us feeling sluggish, foggy, and stuck, both physically and emotionally.
In Ayurveda, we work with the cycles and rhythms of nature to nurture and care for our being.
There is always a guide. How cool!?
Ayurveda offers simple, supportive ways to align with the rhythm of spring, helping you feel light, energized, and renewed.
Recognizing Kapha Imbalance
In winter, our bodies naturally slow down, craving warmth and comfort. Spring invites renewal, but we must shed the heaviness of winter first.
Common Kapha Imbalance Symptoms:
Physical:
- Water retention or puffiness
- Slow, heavy digestion or bloating
- Sinus congestion and seasonal allergies
Mental & Emotional:
- Low energy and procrastination
- Brain fog or lack of clarity
- Feeling emotionally weighed down or uninspired
When Kapha builds up, it’s like the body and mind get stuck or feel stagnant and heavy.
Spring is the perfect time to gently clear out the excess and invite movement, lightness, and clarity back in.
Ayurvedic Spring Practices for Balance
Help your body shake off the heaviness of sleep and support natural detoxification:
- Tongue Scraping: Quick and easy way to stimulate the digestive system. Clear away overnight toxins and up your oral health.
- Dry Brushing: Use long, sweeping strokes toward the heart to increase circulation and awaken the lymphatic system. Try before a bath or a shower.
- Ginger Tea on an Empty Stomach: A warm, spicy start to your day that stokes digestive fire (agni) and melts away sluggishness.
- Hot Water with Lemon: Start your day with a cup of warm/hot water and a splash of lemon. When lemon enters the body, it becomes alkaline and helps balance the pH of the body while also igniting the agni or digestive fire in the belly.
Movement for Kapha Balance
We’ve mentioned that spring is dominated by Kapha energy—earthy, slow, and dense. We all carry some kapha energy within the body: by nourishing ourselves, caring for others, and being strong, dependable people.
If Kapha is out of balance, we may feel sluggish, unmotivated, or congested, as the heavy nature of this energy can weigh us down both physically and emotionally.
Let’s shift to light.
Kapha thrives on steady, invigorating movement. Get your body flowing early in the day with practices like:
- Move: Brisk morning walks in the fresh spring air. Aim for sunlight earlier in the day to regulate your circadian rhythms.
- Uplift: Energizing yoga sequences (think sun salutations and twists) Yoga For Moods | UPLIFT
- Joy: Dance breaks—yes, even 10 minutes counts! Truly, whatever wiggles that bring a sense of lightness to the body.
Aim for movement that feels fun, uplifting, and a little warming to counterbalance the cool, heavy energy of the season.
Eating for Spring Balance
In Ayurveda, food isn’t just about nutrients—it’s about energetic balance. Each season calls for a different combination of the six tastes: sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter, and astringent.
During spring, we want to reduce Kapha-aggravating tastes (sweet, sour, and salty) and favor those that lighten and stimulate (pungent, bitter, and astringent).
Shift your meals to match the qualities of spring by focusing on foods that are:
- Bitter (detoxifying, cleansing): Leafy greens, dandelion, turmeric, cacao.
- Pungent (stimulating, warming): Ginger, black pepper, garlic, mustard seeds.
- Astringent (drying, lightening): Lentils, chickpeas, green tea, pomegranate.
By incorporating more bitter, pungent, and astringent foods, we help counteract Kapha’s heaviness, support digestion, and encourage the natural detox process that spring invites.
(A full guide to the six tastes is coming soon!)

Mental & Emotional Renewal
Spring invites us to clear not only our homes but also our minds and hearts. Spring cleaning certainly didn’t come out of nowhere. Just don’t forget about all the parts that need the refresh.
- Declutter: Tidy your space, refresh your wardrobe, and donate what no longer serves you. A clear space = a clear mind. Garage sale, anyone!?
- Breathwork: Try stimulating pranayama like Kapalabhati (Skull-Shining Breath) to shake off sluggishness, clear mental fog, and ignite inner heat. This rapid, rhythmic breathwork is like an internal spring cleaning—leaving you refreshed, alert, and energized.
- How to Practice:
Sit tall with a straight spine.
Take a deep inhale, then begin short, forceful exhales through the nose, allowing the inhale to happen naturally.
Continue for 30 seconds, rest, then repeat for up to 3 rounds.- Avoid if pregnant or experiencing dizziness—opt for deep belly breathing instead.
- How to Practice:
- Journaling: As the season shifts, it’s a perfect time for self-reflection and intention-setting. Use these journal prompts to release what no longer serves you and create space for renewal:
- What thoughts, habits, or emotions feel heavy from winter that I’m ready to let go of?
- What fresh energy, practices, or intentions do I want to invite into my daily life this season?
- What is one simple action I can take today to align with the lighter, more vibrant energy of spring?
- What thoughts, habits, or emotions feel heavy from winter that I’m ready to let go of?
Give yourself 5-10 minutes to free-write, letting your thoughts flow without judgment. This practice helps clear the mind and set a clear path for the season ahead.
Spring is nature’s gentle nudge to awaken from winter’s rest. By making small, supportive shifts, you can release stagnation and step into this new season feeling light, clear, and inspired.
Start with just 1-2 of these Ayurvedic practices today and notice how your energy begins to shift. Renewal doesn’t have to be complicated—it just starts with a single step.
It is important not to rush during this transition.
